چکیده

An enduring challenge in humancomputer interaction (HCI) research is the creation of natural and intuitive interfaces. Besides the obvious requirement that such interfaces communicate over modalities such as natural language (especially spoken) and gesturing that are more natural for humans, exhibiting affect and adaptivity have also been identified as important factors to the interface’s acceptance by the user. In the work presented here, we propose a novel architecture for affective and multimodal dialogue systems that allows explicit control over the personality traits that we want the system to exhibit. More specifically, we approach personality as a means of synthesising different, and possibly conflicting, adaptivity models into an overall model to be used to drive the interaction components of the system. Furthermore, this synthesis is performed in the presence of domain knowledge, so that domain structure and relations influence the results of the calculation.

Langage de conversation multimodal pour agent conversationnel animé

This article falls within the realm of dialogue between a human and an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA). We claim that a specific agent conversational language is needed for such interactions, based on the essential role of emotion in human communication. In order to define this language, we propose a library of Multimodal Conversation Acts is proposed, based in particular on speech acts and...

Building embodied agents that experience and express emotions: A football supporter as an example

In this paper we presented Obie, an embodied agent that experiences and expresses emotions. Obie has an adaptive, quantitative and domain-independent emotion component which appraises events to trigger emotions. Obie’s emotions are expressed via his utterances or his facial expressions. The expression via utterances is done by a simple mapping from emotions to text fragments. The mapping from e...

Human and Virtual Agents Interacting in the Virtual Continuum

In this paper we take a multi-party interaction point of view on our research on multimodal interactions between agents in various virtual environments: an educational environment, a meeting environment, and a storytelling environment. These environments are quite different. All these environments require the modeling of multimodal interaction: interactions between human users, the environments...

A Personality-based Framework for Utterance Generation in Dialogue Applications

Conversation is an essential component of social behaviour, one of the primary means by which humans express emotions, moods, attitudes and personality. Thus a key technical capability for dialogue applications, such as interactive narrative systems (INS), human robot interaction (HRI) and spoken dialogue systems (SDS), is the ability to support natural conversational interaction. However, syst...

Integrating the OCC Model of Emotions in Embodied Characters

The OCC (Ortony, Clore, & Collins, 1988) model has established itself as the standard model for emotion synthesis. A large number of studies employed the OCC model to generate emotions for their embodied characters. Many developers of such characters believe that the OCC model will be all they ever need to equip their character with emotions. This paper points out what the OCC model is able to ...
